This year NHLC worked on more than 100 cases representing Native Hawaiian ʻohana, communities, and cultural practitioners to protect and advance Native Hawaiian rights and justice in legal matters.

NHLC partnered with Maui-based, Native Hawaiian artist Bailey Onaga to create images that represent three examples in celebration of this hana (work).

Traditional hunting Hunting

This image represents traditional hunters. NHLC stands with Native Hawaiian hunters
when their constitutionally protected rights to hunt according to traditional and
customary practices are unreasonably threatened by legal restrictions.

Limu kala Limu

Limu is a critical component of Hawaiʻi’s marine environment and numerous Native
Hawaiian traditional practices. This image of limu kala honors the work NHLC began
more than a decade ago with Uncle Henry Chang Wo. It continues with KUA to protect
limu and other marine life in ʻEwa from permitting that would increase stormwater
runoff from the Kaloʻi Gulch.

Traditional birthing Hānau

With this image of a hāpai makuahine, NHLC honors the work done in partnership with
cultural practitioners, the Center for Reproductive Rights, and Perkins Coie LLP to
protect traditional birthing practices. Traditional and customary Hawaiian hānau
practices are constitutionally protected in Hawaiʻi, and NHLC stands with parents
and their caregivers to uphold those rights.
