NHLC mourns the recent passing of Aunty Pua Burgess, a beloved kūpuna, leader, and friend to many including NHLC. Aunty Pua served on our board from July 8, 2010, and as board president from October 2014 to September 18, 2015. Her commitment to justice, Hawaiian culture, and the lāhui was an inspiration to us all.
We were honored to recognize her service at our 41st Anniversary Fundraiser in 2015 and again at the CNHA Convention in 2016, where she received the Native Hawaiian Advocate Award. Aunty Pua’s legacy of leadership and advocacy will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with her family, and we are forever grateful for her gifts of service.
“Pua Burgess was a dear friend for many decades. She was a confidant, advisor, calabash sister, partner in crime who always put the interests of Hawai`i’s people above all else. I have come across lots of smart people in my life, but few wise ones. Pua was a vestibule of wisdom and grace. Though she is gone physically, her spirit is forever woven to the texture of our islands.”
“She will be deeply missed. The Hā of ‘Anakē Puanani Burgess will continue to drive the passion of the many who felt her embrace. Together we will achieve the vision of a Beloved Community that she so often spoke about. “
ʻO ka pono ke hana ʻia a iho mai nā lani. Continue to do good until the heavens come down to you.
